It's been a busy week... - The Rancho Commons — LiveJournal
Note to self: no whining, no slacking
It's been a busy week...
-My sister was home from Lost Vegas

-I got some new tools - assembly required

-I worked a couple of nights, as usual

-I went camping (last weekend)

-In a few minutes, we are leaving for the Winston-Salem Journal sponsored Spelling Bee. Evan will compete, and, if he was to actually win, would continue on to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.

Now, to be completely honest, I doubt very seriously if he will win. First, he is only 10 and in the fourth grade, and I think the competitiors can be up to 8th graders and 15 or 16. Secondly, he hasn't studied at all and we haven't made him. If he has no interest in being the best speller in the area, I'm not going to force him to try. However, if he wins this competition, I will make him study for the big one. If he is representing the best in the nation, I will make sure he understands the responsibilities. As he said when going to compete in the last event, "I didn't ask for this, you know?" And it's true, all he did was spell well and win his class spelling bee and that set all this in motion. So, now we get to see how far his natural ability will take him in today's competition. If he gets out on the first word, we are still very proud of him and have already told him so.

If he wins, I'm going to embarrass myself. Standby for real updates.

Great attitude about the spelling bee! Maybe not having a bunch of pressure on him to "be the best" will keep Evan relaxed and he will win. With being a good speller and a "natural" good speller, he is already on his way to success! Have a good time. :)
