Do this now.
Okay, if you knew about this and didn't tell me, you're dirty (my sister will understand that last part).

Go here now and sign up for a list in your area. What is it? It is a site called Freecycle where you can post things you no longer need, request things you do need, and pick things up from other people that they no longer need, ALL for FREE! It costs nothing to do any of that.

You get daily (or individual) e-mails if you want listing all the stuff offered and requested. Or, you can receive no e-mails and manually surf through the stuff. In some cases, this may become necessary because the volume of e-mail on some lists would be prohibitive.

Go! Do!

I been doing Freecycle for a while now. Although I have to admit that I get annoyed at times because there are some folks who totally use it as an opportunity to go "shopping" for freebies. "I'm looking for a used x-box or playstation 2 for my boyfriend - he wants a new one" leaving out the "he doesn't work and sits on the couch all day playing video games but I love him and want to keep him around regardless of how angry I get so I will enable his laziness" *grumble*

Otherwise, freecycle is a great thing. I've gotten rid of lots of stuff that way.

Do you know about Craigslist? It's a similar concept, except broader... there's a category for free stuff, but also a barter section, alongside just about every other kind of classified imaginable, and it's got a huge user base. Go there and click on the city you're in (or the one nearest to you) and check it out.

I'm advertising my available unit on there, for free... I get about one call a day from there, compared to the one call I received after spending $100 to post in the local newspaper for an entire week. I've used it to search for jobs and housing, hired help moving when I first got here and didn't know anyone, sold stuff, asked, recieved and been given all kinds of advice on a huge range of issues, and yes, met dates there too. It's been a tremendous resource and I highly recommend it.

(Not that freecycle isn't cool too... it is!)

Er, strike the "been" for the second to last sentence in that.

I hate it when I make typos in comments.
