I don't know..is taking our freedoms for granted necessarily such a bad thing? Think of all the other things in life we either take for granted or remain happily ignorant about. I believe that in order to cherish something deeply, we have to know what life is like without it. I'm glad that you and I are brain-dead on cartoons rather than the alternative.

I mostly agree with you, we take these for granted, and that's because none of us have had to do without them. Mostly. The problem with taking the freedoms listed in the Constitution for granted is that we "forget" what they even were, and that allows those who would take them away to do so without a fuss.

And, I must (unfortunately) confess that I know much more about cartoon characters than I do about the Constitution.

you opened a can of worms, bruce

I've actually been thinking about this today, and to be honest, maintaining awareness and innocence too is a very, very fine line. The closest that we probably ever got in this regard, as a country, was probably that boom time after the horrors of WW2 up to Kennedy's assasination..and even then that was really just white America anyway, you know?

The way I see it, there's no mistake why our society is where it is right now, after generations of relative prosperity. We've let ourselves be weak because there's nothing else left to be. I'm not necessarily saying this is good or bad. It could be bad for the reasons you cite, though. I can't argue that to not be the case..but maybe we can still see places in the world where life is still a struggle and be like, "Yeah..this is NOT what we want. I'm glad we live where we do."

I've never actually been really big on The Simpsons. :)
